Chanel and I met awhile back in a drawing class. Little did I know that sharing my granola bar would lead to meeting my most artistic and tattooed friend!

Her sassy art style and overall badass vibes draw you in immediately, while her intricate tattoo work and masterful paintings keep you hooked. She’s definitely an artist you don’t want to miss.

In this month’s Star Castle Spotlight, she shares her journey into finding her passion, and tips for pushing through the harder times of finding success. I’ve loved watching her flourish as an artist and take the world by storm!

I hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes peek into Chanel’s journey!

What is your artistic passion & how did you first discover your love for it?

Traditional art and tattooing are my passions.

My love of art was instilled in me from a very early age, my grandmother and I would paint together when I was a little girl in preschool. I never stopped drawing and painting from there! As for tattoos, my interest began around middle school.

Thanks to the internet, I was starting to become exposed to different alternative styles as kids do. A lot of the internet celebrities are rock stars I looked up to were covered in tattoos and I loved the way it looked – I wanted to look like that too!

In 8th grade, I met some neighbors in my apartment complex who totally changed the way I pursued and appreciated art. Especially tattoo art. They were a big family, like mine, except the parents were just the coolest people I've ever met to this day. They loved anything to do with art and culture, I wanted to learn everything from them. They were passionate artists and they taught me almost everything I know about art. When I expressed interest in tattooing, they nurtured it any way they could. They'd collect tattoo magazines I'd look at after school and we'd watch L.A. Ink religiously. I still consider them my family, I wouldn't be where I am today had I never met them!

What would 'success' look like to you with this passion of yours?

Making a living from my artwork is all I've ever wanted and I'm grateful to be experiencing it right now!

How would you describe your unique art style?

Sparkly, pink, fierce!

What is one take-away you'd love viewers to gather after experiencing your work?

I like to leave that up to the beholder. If my art can invoke any feeling or thought, that in itself is amazing to me! I believe the way any art is received is deeply personal to each person who encounters it.

How do you know when a piece is 'done'?

It varies from piece to piece, it's really a feeling.

Do you have any advice / tips for someone looking to dive deeper and pursue their own creative passion?

It's okay to quit and restart sometimes, or even many times. It's okay to fail.

Know when it's time to push forward and when it's time to pack up and go home. Resist the desire to throw all of your chips into a bad investment. Think tactfully and honestly with yourself about your pursuit and the steps you need to take to get there, always.
